The NYSSCPA (New York State Society of CPA's) has prepared this glossary as an educational tool for journalists who report on and interpret financial information.

All companies, foreign and domestic, are required to file registration statements, periodic reports, and other forms electronically through EDGAR. Anyone can access and download this information for free. Here you'll find links to a complete list of filings available through EDGAR and instructions for searching the EDGAR database. The information about each company includes financial status, chief officers, stock information, company history, pending litigation that might have an economic impact on the company, and more.

The GASB is the independent organization that establishes and improves standards of accounting and financial reporting for U.S. state and local government.

The PCAOB is a nonprofit corporation established by Congress to oversee the audits of public companies in order to protect the interests of investors and further the public interest in the preparation of informative, accurate and independent audit reports.
